Advertisement Shoalhaven Starches has entered into an enforceable undertaking with the EPA, after the collapse of its wheat storage silos in Bomaderry caused approximately 2,000 tonnes of wheat grain to spill into the Shoalhaven River. The submerged grain had the potential to release high levels of nutrients and organic mat- ter into the water, which had the potential to cause environmen- tal harm. Shoalhaven Starches commenced efforts to remove the grain immediately following the incident and daily monitoring did not show any significant variance from the established river background levels for adopted criteria of environmental harm from the grain. Shoalhaven Starches will contribute over $170,000 towards works being undertaken by Shoalhaven City Council, to improve the environmental health of the Shoalhaven River and its habitats. In addition to this enforceable undertaking, the EPA has varied Shoalhaven Starches' environment protection licence to require it to conduct an environmental hazard analysis and establish a community consultative committee.
